Posted on 29 May, 2018 at 21:40

Annalese and Taryn, our lovely young secretaries in The Wellness Clinic, are moving on and up in their nursing careers!  Recently appointed as Assistant Nurses at local Healthscope Hospitals, we will now sadly be seeing less of them in the Clinic.  We wish them well for their future and much success in their professional endeavours!

Precision Medicine - What is it?

Posted on 29 May, 2018 at 21:10

According to the Precision Medicine Initiative, precision medicine is "an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person." This approach will allow doctors and researchers to predict more accurately which treatment and prevention strategies for a particular disease will work in which groups of people. It is in contrast to a one-size-fits-all approach, in which disease treatment and prevention strategies are developed for the average person, with less consideration for the differences between individuals.

Although the term "precision medicine" is relatively new, the concept has been a part of healthcare for many years. For example, a person who needs a blood transfusion is not given blood from a randomly selected donor; instead, the donor’s blood type is matched to the recipient to reduce the risk of complications. Although examples can be found in several areas of medicine, the role of precision medicine in day-to-day healthcare is relatively limited. Researchers hope that this approach will expand to many areas of health and healthcare in coming years.

Genes hold clue why many people with obesity don't get diabetes

Posted on 27 March, 2018 at 21:00

A new UK study suggests that individuals with 14 identified genetic factors are able to safely store body fat which means that, despite having a higher percentage body fat, these individuals are protected from type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.  People carrying these genes (estimated 5 % of individuals) have a so-called 'favourable' adiposity profile, whereby their extra fat is stored subcutaneously rather than around organs such as the liver (visceral fat).

Check out this fascinating article about which patients may benefit from a diet first devised in 1921 for epilepsy patients but which is now increasingly popular for patients with diabetes and obesity.

Tele-Health is all the go

Posted on 17 January, 2017 at 18:30

Do you find it a hassle to get to the doctors' office?   Difficult to take time off work?   The traffic a nightmare and the drive exhausting?                   Then Tele-Health may be just what you're looking for for!   The Wellness Clinic has always offered a range of Convenience Services, for a nominal fee and not requiring your attendance, for example for prescription renewal and referral renewal.   NEW on offer in 2017 will be e-consultations, via email or FaceTime.   These media are suitable for consultations involving discussion only (and not physical examination)  and therefore would be most appropriate for follow-up consultations.   Fees are chargeable at $50 per 10 minutes.   Medicare does not currently offer rebates for non-attendance services.   Please consider the convenience and value this service may offer to you.

Time for a 'grease and oil change'?

Posted on 17 January, 2017 at 17:50

We remember to have our car serviced regularly!   But what about our own health?   Please consider the value of a 'once a year once-over', as is on offer at The Wellness Clinic.   An Annual Health Assessment allows us to attend to all those accumulating health concerns, some apparent and some not so apparent.   When was the last time you had a 'full physical'?   Please call us right now to book your one hour appointment for 2017.

Genetic testing now available via The Wellness Clinic

Posted on 29 December, 2016 at 20:00

In 1953 scientists Watson and Crick discovered the double helix structure of DNA, giving rise to modern molecular biology and ground-breaking insights into the genetic code.  In the 21st century, genetic medicine is advancing at a rapid pace.  Specialised laboratories now have the ability to perform a person's whole genome sequencing, from a simple mouth swab.  Now readily available and affordable is a "Genetic Predisposition Test", which can test for a total of 124 genetic traits.  This includes 31 disease conditions, 53 carrier status conditions, 12 drug response genes, 6 wellness tests, 11 personal traits and 11 addictions.  If you are interested in or considering having this test, please make an appointment with Dr Ison for a personalised assessment which includes pre-test counselling.
